For decades, Pete Hammer has been a driving force within the Ontario Quarter Horse Association (OQHA), demonstrating leadership, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of the Quarter Horse industry in Ontario. His long-standing involvement has had a profound and lasting impact on OQHA programs, horse shows, breeders, and competitors across the province.
Pete has played a major role in OQHA governance, serving in several critical leadership positions. He acted as Chairman of the OQHA Board, helped guide the association as Vice President for two years, and further demonstrated his commitment by serving as OQHA President for an additional two years. His steady leadership, forward thinking approach, and passion for the industry helped strengthen the association and ensure its continued success.
In addition to his organizational leadership, Pete has been influential in the breeding and development of high quality American Quarter Horses in Ontario. For 15-plus years, he has stood one of OQHA’s top stallions, contributing significantly to the quality and competitiveness of horses in the region. His breeding program has produced multiple OQHA futurity winners, world champions, Quarter Horse Congress champions, and numerous Top 5 and Top 10 finishers. His horses have left their mark not only within Ontario, but across the North American Quarter Horse community.
Pete has also been instrumental in sustaining and strengthening the OQHA Futurity program, helping ensure that it remained active and successful for many years. His ongoing support and advocacy have played a major role in its longevity and prestige.
One of the most meaningful indicators of Pete’s influence is the legacy he has built through his family. Three generations of the Hammer family have now shown and competed in OQHA events, reflecting a true multigenerational commitment to the association and to the Quarter Horse breed. This family legacy speaks volumes about the culture of passion, sportsmanship, and excellence that Pete has fostered.
Through his leadership roles, influential breeding program, contributions to futurity programs, and lasting family involvement, Pete Hammer exemplifies the values and spirit of the Ontario Quarter Horse Association.
